Summary
In the article “School Data Finds Pattern of Inequality Along Racial Lines,” Motoko Rich demonstrates that students of color are affected by the inequality in educational opportunities in all American public schools. According to the data, African American and Latino students are more likely than White students to be suspended and expelled from school, to have minimal access to advanced math and science courses, and to be educated by inadequate teachers who lack experience. The article claims that inequity in education impacts not only racial minorities in middle or high schools, but also preschoolers who encounter suspension form pre-K programs and tougher discipline than White preschoolers. The author suggests that teachers who do not meet all teaching requirements should not be working with racial minorities; however, this dilemma is difficult to solve because every school district is responsible for hiring teachers.  Finally, President Obama encouraged states and school districts to work on programs in order to close the educational gaps presented in the data.
