Assignment
Answer the following question in 1000 – 1200-words. Concentrate on the goals of this assignment. After you accomplish that goal: you should use it to guide the rest of your paper. Thus, explain and establish the positions you assert in your thesis.
Use an academic style for your quotations and citations. Do not rely on quotations to answer the question (thus, the fact that someone stated x does not yet prove x).
Tasks:
1. Write a concise and detailed introduction paragraph.
2. Include in your introductory paragraph a thesis that contains an argumentative and a contrastive component.
3. Answer the assigned questions while demonstrating your knowledge of the assigned portion of the texts and ideas and arguments they contain.
Questions
– How does Socrates’ negative evaluation of the artist (in the Ion, the “Allegory of the Cave”, or “Book X” of the Republic) compare to Banksy’s statement (in Exit through the Gift Shop): “Warhol repeated iconic images until they became meaningless, but there was still something iconic about them. Thierry really makes them meaningless.”
– What are the respective views of Socrates and Banksy? Where do they exactly disagree?
– What are the respective strengths and weaknesses of each view?
– Who has the better view?
Here is an example of a thesis statement from a student’s paper that displays both an argumentative and contrastive component:
Although Banksy voices valid concerns about Thierry’s artistic career, I will argue that Socrates’ view that not just Thierry but all artists (including Banksy) are merely copying reality is the more convincing standpoint.
I have provided the “Book X” of the Republic and “Ion” article in the uploaded additional materials. For the banksy’s and Allegory of the Cave article you should find it by yourself.
