Some social theorists and science fiction writers have imagined a near-future society that could exist after a major worldwide pandemic. One such idea would be that the United States breaks up into several different countries, based on geographical location, culture, ideology, and law. Using concepts from our class, discuss how you might imagine such a post-apocalyptic world. How many new countries could the USA break up into? Which areas would they be? What cultures, values, ideologies, and laws would these new mini-countries value? What names might they have? What would the pros and cons of such a development be? Which new country would you like to be a citizen of? Use your imagination and have fun with this discussion.
