IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:
Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.
What is the built environment?
Built environments are all things made around us by individuals, which form physical characteristics within a community. These characteristics consist of facilities, buildings, waterways, electricity, and other infrastructures where people live, work, and travel (“The Built Environment Assessment Tool Manual,” 2019). In addition, these recreational spaces are costly and require a lot of time and attention to develop. Many of these manmade features in communities entail schools, recreation areas, and transportation facilities to provide education and wellness plus add value and build up communities (Naughton, 2018).
Discuss the characteristics of a good community design that successfully promotes environmental health.
Community designs are agreed upon by the cities Engineering Division who make sure that inspections, repairs, and improvements are made around town, which follows city guidelines. A successful community design would provide places such as parks, access to transportation and other community facilities made available to individuals, which can have a great impact on the health of a community by providing healthier, safer ways of living, healthy food choices and available transportation outlets to all (“Integrating Health into Comprehensive Planning” n.d.). Good community designs will promote public safety, social equity issues, air, and water quality (“Integrating Health into Comprehensive Planning” n.d.) In addition, it will restore the physical and psychological health of people in the community.
Include in your discussion transportation options, environmental pollution sources, and exposure.
There are several reasons why our environment is polluted and one factor is due to the emissions released into the air. The main environmental source of pollutions comes from metals, acid, gases, and other noncombustible matter (National Research Council, 2000). Individuals are exposed every day to these pollutants through inhalation, or through the consumption of contaminated food and water (National Research Council, 2000). Transportation options to improve air quality, physical activity, and prevent disease would be for individuals to invest in electric cars, Zip Cars, or even rideshare to cut down on the use of emission. Bike riding to work or even walking to places is a great way to incorporates physical fitness and reduce air pollution.
How is social justice achieved in community planning?
Social justice is the dissemination of equal opportunity and privileges for all. This can be achieved in community planning by electing residents to be advocates to protest and hold demonstrations to report issues that are unjust in and around town. Residents can provide feedback to policymakers and request changes to programs and policies that may not be effectively working in the community (“Community Toolbox Section 3. Social Planning and Policy Change”). Community members who are engaged in the social planning of their community help push policies and practices that will be beneficial to all residents (“Community Toolbox Section 3. Social Planning and Policy Change”).
