The purpose of the Signature Assignment is to have you work with real-life data to answer a real-life question using the tools, technology, and skills of MTH/219. In Week 5, you will create a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation to answer the question you chose in Week 1.

Create a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation and include the following:

One slide (Introduction) on your topic and question

Which topic/question did you choose?

Why does it interest you?

Where did you find the data?

One slide for each graphic

These should be clear, neat, organized, and labeled.

Explain how you created these slides, and show your answers to the previous week’s questions in the notes section of your slide.

What did you conclude in each week?

One slide for a conclusion

Restate your topic and question, and give your answer to the question.

Show which model you chose that best fits your data and explain why.

Make a prediction about a future value based on your model and equation.

Save your Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation and Speaker Notes that should contain 260 to 350 words. The Speaker Notes should include everything you would say if you were giving the Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation in person.

Using Geometry to Make Your Getaway.

You desperately need a place to get away and relax.  There is no money in the budget to purchase the materials to build one, but there might be another way.  Your favorite building supply store is having a contest and will build a man cave or she shed for the lucky winner.  To enter, you design and submit the plans and the store chooses the winning design and builds it for the winner free of charge.

Post 1Choose one of the following as the shape of your shed – square, or rectangle – and list the dimensions.  Each dimension (length, width, etc.) must be 15 feet or less. 

Find the area of the floor of your getaway using the appropriate formula.  Don’t forget to use the correct units for area.  Round your answer to the nearest hundredth, if necessary.

Go to the website of your favorite building supply store and get the price of the flooring you would like to use.  Remember, the sky is the limit since you are planning on winning the contest and the store will be paying the bill.  Include the link to the flooring so we can admire your choice.  Using the area, find the approximate cost of the flooring.  This is a money amount, so round your answer accordingly.

Probability

• What is the difference between theoretical and empirical probability?  What is the theoretical probability of flipping a coin and getting a tail?  Do you expect the empirical probability to be the same as the theoretical probability?  Why or why not? 
• Name your favorite musician, actor, author or artist and do a Google search to find his or her age.  Flip a coin one time for each year the person is old.  If he or she is 34, flip the coin 34 times.  Record the number of tails you obtain. 
• Use the data to determine the empirical probability that the coin will land on tails.  Express the probability as a fraction, a decimal, and a percentage.  Round your answers to two decimal places, if necessary.

Using Statistics

In Unit 10, we are learning about statistics.  Measures of central tendency or “average” are arguably the most common statistics we use in day to day life.  For this discussion, we will see how measures of central tendency can be used to make comparisons when we are considering a major purchase

You are looking for a home in your area. Go to a website that shows home prices in your area and allows you to search based on specific criteria.  Identify at least three criteria (e.g., number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, square footage, type of heat) you can use to narrow your search and find the prices of at least ten homes.  Do not include price as one of the criteria as we would like to see a range of prices.

• What criteria did you use in your home search?
• List the prices (ten or more) of the homes you found.
• Find the mean, median, and mode (if applicable) of the home prices. If there is no mode, explain why.
