Development is controversial. We’ve discussed different cases that development produced negative effects to indigenous people and ecologies across the world. However, we also hear stories in which local communities long for development projects to improve their lives while people outside the communities protest these projects for various reasons. Do you think if there is an ethical way to implement development projects? Or do you think we should discard development at once and come up with something better?
In the documentary The Shape of Water, we see women in the Global South face various kind of suppression and injustice—from traditional genital mutilation to the erosion of indigenous ways of living. We are also encouraged by how they organize themselves to fight for rights and to make a change. Which story inspires you the most?
