Case study

Aims and background
Going international usually presents the firm with new environment, new ways of doing business, and a range of new problems, uncertainties and risks. One of the challenges faced by international business management is to choose an appropriate mode of entry when expanding its business to different foreign markets. Appropriate decision on entry mode is more likely to occur when solid analysis of the firm’s and the target markets’ situation are in place. By studying a real world case, this assignment is designed to help you consolidate your understanding on entry modes, the environment analysis associated with entry modes, and the strategic consideration behind entry mode choices. This activity also aims to sharpen your analytical skills and abilities for problem analysis and solving.

Procedures and questions:

1. Choose any one (1) of the following three (3) companies as your case study and only focus on this selected case for the purpose of this assignment.
• Starbucks
• Singapore Airlines
• Samsung
2. Identify two (2) different entry modes that have been used by the selected company when internationalising its business to two (2) different foreign markets (Entry mode 1 for foreign market A, entry mode 2 for foreign market B). The identified cases should be from 1990 and onward.
3. Answer the following questions:
1) Is the entry mode appropriate for each foreign market? Why? You need to answer this question by analysing how the political, legal, economic and cultural environments of each foreign market suits or does not suit the entry mode adopted by the company.
2) What are the strategic considerations behind each entry? You need to answer this question by analysing why
a) the timing of each entry and the scale of each entry mode
b) the level of control, risks, return and integration associated with each entry mode
suit the company’s then situation and how they can help the company achieve its then strategic vision/goal.

Format
This assessment task should include the following sections:
• Title page (title of your report, your name, student number and word count)
• Introduction
• Environmental analysis of entry mode (Answer question 1 in this section. You can change the heading name and make your own sub-headings.)
• Strategy analysis of entry mode (Answer question 2 in this section. You can change the heading name and make your own sub-headings.)
• Conclusion
• Reference List (is excluded from word counts)

Guidelines
1. The core of this assignment is to assess your level of mastery of the subject matters and your analytical skills in relation to market entry modes. Being descriptive is NOT appropriate for this assignment.
2. Keep the Introduction and Conclusion short (maximum 200 words each) and focus on the analysis.

Submission of assignment
1) RMIT is moving to electronic submission of all assignments. The soft copy of this assignment (including reference list) needs to be submitted to the on-line Blackboard of this course by 23:00 (Singapore time) on the due date.
2) A signed Assignment Cover Sheet must be submitted together with your assignment.
3) Any late assignment, unless granted an extension, will be penalised at 10% of your assignment result for each day after the due date. No assignment will be accepted more than seven calendar days late without Special Consideration (see Extension of time for assignment submission below).

Important Information about electronic submission of the soft copy
1) Multiple submissions (up to 3 times) to the Blackboard are allowed. However, only the latest submission will be assessed. You must note that the soft copy submitted to the Blackboard will be Turnitin checked. Therefore, you are recommended to make one submission as multiple submissions might cause a high similarity index. Double check everything before submission.
2) You need to note that the Blackboard system might not be able to process your submission in the case of large volume of submissions at the same time (for example: if a large number of students submit their assignments just right before the due time). Therefore, you need to allow yourself sufficient time to submit the soft copy.

Case Study 1: Martin

Martin, a behavior analyst, is working with Sara, a 14-year-old girl with severe developmental delays who exhibits self-injurious behavior (SIB). The self-injurious behaviors included pulling her hair, biting her arm and banging her head against the wall. After conducting a functional analysis, Martin decided to employ an intervention program consisting of differential reinforcement of other (DRO) desired behavior. Martin collected data on Sara’s SIB before and during the intervention. Below is a depiction of the data that Martin collected:

Sara’s Frequency of SIB
BASELINE  Occurrences DRO Occurrences
22 5
25 5
27 3
26 2

Address the following questions, and complete the following requirements:

  1. Create a basic line graph using Microsoft Excel, to be included in your Word document. The graph should depict the data provided in this case study. You should only need to create one graph, with SIB depicted, both in baseline and in intervention.
  2. What type of research design did Martin employ when working with Sara?
  3. According to the data, did the intervention that Martin selected work in modifying Sara’s self-injurious behavior?
  4. Martin had considered using an ABAB reversal design when working with Sara. What are some ethical implications of selecting a reversal design when working with the type of behavior problems that Sara was exhibiting?
  5. Martin’s supervisor requested this graph of the data he collected when working with Sara. Why are graphs useful in evaluating behavior change?
  6. Discuss what a functional relationship is and how an ABA professional would use his/her understanding of functional relationships when designing an intervention. Identify whether the graph that your created using the data provided in this section depicts a functional relationship.
