You are treating Janet for major depression. Janet, in addition to depression, has a history of alcohol addiction, but she is currently sober and actively attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). After most sessions, Janet appears to be happy with her progress, but after a few sessions, she seems to be non-communicative and upset. Eventually she terminates therapy, and you learn that she has engaged another counselor for the treatment of her alcohol addiction. This morning you received notice that a complaint had been filed against you with your state licensing board, alleging that you were attempting to treat Janet’s addiction to alcohol and that you did not have the expertise necessary to do so. You are a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), you have a master’s degree in professional counseling, but you have not had specialized training in the treatment of alcoholism, addiction, or substance use disorders. Identify the steps you would take to respond to the board complaint. How would you avoid this type of complaint in the future?
