I’m stuck on a English question and need an explanation.
Assignment: Scene Selections
Resource: Your self-selected unit novel
Assignment Length: A short list of 3 scenes or sections from your novel
Due date: Week 3: Thursday, July 2 by 11:55 pm
Points: 10 (Coursework category)
Format: Text submission box
Please Note: This scene selection list must be submitted BEFORE you will be allowed to take the unit essay exam this unit.
The assigned Yonnondio reading this unit is NOT available as a text to write your essay on – you’ll need to research your own book to read and respond to for the unit essay.
The Assignment
Your essay this unit will be a timed in-course reader response to a selection from a novel you’ve already selected and read on your own. The actual selection from the novel you’ll be responding to and critiquing in the exam will be chosen by me, with your guidance: for this homework assignment, you need to choose and list for me three scenes or sections from your novel – one from the first third of the book, one from the middle third, one from the last third.
I will be randomly choosing one of your nominated scenes for you to write about once you actually begin the exam. You will not know which of the three scenes or passages you nominate from your novel you’ll be asked to respond to until you actually begin, so you’ll need to be prepared to write about any of them.
* Please note that the scenes or passages you nominate here must also be in your screen/stage adaptations that you’ve already watched. Please also note that I do NOT want you to submit the whole text of each nominated scene or section for this assignment; you only need to list what and where the three scenes are in the novel. Briefly describe each of them in 2 sentences or less and then list page / section / chapter / etc. numbers as appropriate to identify each nominated scene.
| This homework assignment is required and must be completed BEFORE you take the midterm exam. I won’t be providing any feedback on your selections this time though, nor will your grade for this item be entered necessarily before you take the midterm exam. Please don’t wait for a grade here before starting your essay exam. Once you have submitted your 3 scene nominations you may begin the exam. |
Submission Guidelines
Again, please list below 3 different scenes or passages from your novel that you feel comfortable responding to and critiquing in the midterm essay exam. Your scenes MUST be drawn, one each, from the first third, the middle, and the last third of your novel, respectively.
List each scene by its chapter or section number and its page number and/or page span if it covers more than one page. I would suggest choosing a section that’s between 1 and 3 pages long so that you’ll have enough to respond to and critique in your exam essay.
Provide a very brief (1-2 sentences) description of what’s happening in each of the 3 scenes you’re nominating so that I’ll be able to more easily identify the scene selection in your midterm exam. Do NOT type in the full text of each scene.
You’ll need to number each one separately so that the first scene nomination from the first third of your novel is number 1, the second from the middle of your novel is number 2, and the third one from the last part of your novel is number 3. It is very important that you number them thusly, otherwise I will not be able to accept this homework assignment for credit and you won’t be allowed to take the midterm itself.
The parameters for your scene selections are these:
- Scenes listed here may NOT be any of the same passages you responded to in your Journal write earlier in the unit. Please choose new scenes to list here. Essays that respond to the same scene or scenes you have already responded to elsewhere will not receive any credit.
- The scenes must be drawn one each from the beginning, middle and end of your novel respectively, as described above.
- Scene nominations must be numbered in sequential order from 1 to 3 beginning with the first scene from the first third of the novel
- Each scene or passage you nominate needs to be a minimum of half a page but not more than 5 pages in length in your source novel
- Each scene nomination MUST include the following:
- chapter or section numbers/letters
- page number(s)
- short description of 1-2 sentences, not more than that
This scene nomination list is required in order to take the unit essay exam this week. It’s worth 10 points and is due by the date listed above.
