Option #1: Ibsen’s A Doll’s House

Choose one of the options below and develop an analysis:

• In “The Quintessence of Ibsenism,” George Bernard Shaw says that Ibsen, reacting against a common theatrical preference for strange situations, “saw that… the more familiar the situation, the more interesting the play. Shakespeare had put ourselves on the stage but not our situations. Our uncles seldom murder our fathers… marry our mothers… Ibsen… give us not only ourselves but ourselves in our own situations. The things that happen to his stage figures are things that happen to us. One consequence is that his plays are much more important to us than Shakespeare’s. • Ibsen very reluctantly acceded to a request for an alternate ending to a German production. In the new ending, Helmer forces Nora to look at their sleeping children and reminds her that “tomorrow when they wake up and call for their mother, they will be—motherless.” Nora “struggles with herself as the play concludes by saying, “oh, this is a sin against myself, but I cannot leave.” In view of the fact that this last act moves toward a happy ending, what is wrong with this alternative ending?
• Can it be argued that—although at the end Nora goes out to achieve self-realization—her abandonment of her children is a crime? Nora seems to imply, in some passages, that because she forged a signature that she is unfit to bring them up. How do you see this situation?
• The play is not so much about women’s rights as about the need to find out the kind of person he or she really is, and to strive to become a better person. What evidence can you offer to support this interpretation?

Explore how literature has played a role in your larger understanding of the world. Find and explain a personal example of a book, a story, a poem or a play that has impacted you in some meaningful way. How did that piece of literature help you understand the world in a new way? Reflecting on how you were impacted by this piece of literature, reflect on the way that literature impacts the larger world, society even, and write about what you think its larger social value might be. Does literature matter?

Remember all homework assignments must be two full pages and in MLA format.

Essay #1
Format: 12-point Times or Times New Roman font only. Double-spaced. No extra spaces between paragraphs. You do not need to include a “Works Cited” page, but you do need to parenthetically cite your quotes from the text.

For this first essay, make an interpretive argument, supported by textual details, that goes beyond simply summarizing the events of the narrative. Your paper should address the
following:
1. What is the point or meaning of the story, as you see it?
This is the interpretive part of your thinking. As such, there is an implicit argument already built in at a basic level.
2. What formal elements support this reading/interpretation or have led you to it?
This question asks you to look carefully at specific textual elements that are relevant and important to your reading of the text.

Thinking about these two questions should lay the groundwork for a thesis statement. I am not looking for papers that simply recapitulate what we have discussed in class(although you can certainly use that as a basis for your analysis). In no case should your thesis or discussion fall into summary. For instance: “Miss Sasagawara is isolated from,
but also a figure of fascination for, her community” is not an argument; rather, it sums up an important factor in the story, and it is clear that the story is depicting someone who is isolated, etc. This kind of summary thesis statement locks you into a largely summary based paper in which one would then list examples where we see Miss Sasagawara isolated, as well as a list of examples when she is being looked at. Such a paper already puts you, at the very highest, at a “C.”
