Professional office memo

Description Goals for Assignment 3: Your goal for this assignment is to write a professional office memorandum that clearly and succinctly communicates your research to your audience. You should create a well-researched, organized and written document that will provide important information to the audience on your individual research topic. The Memo can be “informative” – one that provides information to your audience about a legal issue/topic and analyzes that issue/topic with some depth. For example, the memo may explain to your audience how a newly adopted statute or regulation will specifically impact your professional area of practice and suggest ways that a professional working in that area may need or want to prepare or adapt for those changes. (Note: This is just one example of a topic that might be the focus of an “informative” memorandum. Individual feedback on your proposed topic will be provided in week 3 of the term.) Alternatively, the Memo may be “persuasive” – One where you take a specific position on a legal issue and then persuade your audience as to why the position is a valid one through analysis. For example, you may argue in the memo that some specific statute or regulation should be amended to address a legal need, issue, or problem. (Note: This is only one example of a topic that might be the focus of a “persuasive” memorandum. Individual feedback on your proposed topic will be provided in week 3 of the term.) Your memorandum may also be some combination of both. The memorandum must have a legal focus. In other words, it must discuss, analyze, or explore some legal issue, problem, or topic. Format: Your assignment should be in the format discussed in our Live Class 2. A recording of the live class session and the live class PowerPoint presentation will be available in the Module 3 materials approximately 48 hours after the end of the session. You can also access two student-written sample professional memos in the Module 3 materials. •Your professional memo should be written in 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, and with one (1) inch margins all around. •The memorandum should contain: 1.A Title Page or Traditional Memo Heading (Title pages will not be counted toward the page limit.) 2.An Introduction paragraph or paragraphs that includes a revised abstract, a clear statement of your thesis, and a roadmap for your memo. 3.A body – The body of the memo is where most of your analysis and/or discussion will take place. 4.A Conclusion paragraph(s); and 5.A bibliography, works cited page(s), or source list (The bibliography / source list will not be counted toward the page limit.) The bibliography / source list may use Bluebook, MLA, or APA citation format. • The page limit for this assignment is eight (8) pages excluding any Title Page and Bibliography pages. This is only a page maximum and a student may be able to write a strong memorandum in fewer pages. Usually, the normal page range for this assignment is between six (6) to eight (8) pages. The page limit will be enforced. Memos exceeding the page limitation will be subject to a point deduction.
