I don’t know how to handle this History question and need guidance.
In 1964, the Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health firmly established that cigarette smoking was seriously harmful. With this definitive finding came questions of how government, society, individuals and the tobacco industry should deal with this knowledge. Although tobacco executives and some others publicly emphasized that smokers could freely choose to smoke or to quit, the smoke from cigarettes affected others besides smokers themselves. By 1988, the Surgeon General reported that cigarettes were addictive, making smokers’ free choice less clear. And the strong tendency of smokers to initiate the activity as teenagers rather than adults became more of a concern to many. Additionally, tobacco company motives and public statements became increasingly suspect. The changing landscape surrounding the place of smoking in American society becomes evident in documents from the time period you will be examining in your paper.
Choose a document from the UCSF Truth Tobacco Documents website (https://industrydocuments.library.ucsf.edu) written between 1964 and 1998where the author focuses on a relevant aspect of cigarette smoking (such as addiction, youth smoking or secondhand smoke). You will need to closely describe your document, in terms of what it says, who wrote it, and for whom it was written. As with your last paper, along with describing and analyzing your chosen document, you need to discuss how it relates to the time period in which it was written.
Your paper should
- be 3-5 pages long (double-spaced, 12 point font; approximately 850-1200 words), and
- use the MLA format, including internal references referring to class lectures and readings and also a works cited page.
Main Components of the Assignment:
Find a document that relates to one of the main themes about cigarette smoking that we’ve been discussing in class. Secondhand smoke, “safer” cigarettes, addiction, and youth smoking would all be good topics, but something more general about attitudes and strategies of the tobacco companies would also be fine.
Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (https://industrydocuments.library.ucsf.edu/) is the website to use in order to find a document. Here are some tips on finding a document:
▪Choose the “Guided Search” tab to usefully limit your search parameters.
▪Limiting your search by collectionor date can also be helpful. In the Search Options section, For instance, you can select a span of yearswhen you click on “Document Date Ranges.” If you are interested in a particular company, when you click on “Tobacco Collections”you can limit your search to only that collection.
As you write, make sure to:
