Assignment 1: Discussion

During this second module, we focus upon the concept of culture and all its components. After you have read the reading assignment and lectures for this module, please respond to all parts of the discussion by Saturday, January 21, 2017:

1. The sociologist, Robin Williams Jr., originally created a list of ten central values in American culturein 1970.
   • How do you believe this list might be different if it were created today?
   • Which values do you believe have changed since this list was originally made? Why?
   • Please use examples to illustrate how these values have changed using the media, social policy, politics, or otherwise.
2. What are five symbols important to American culture?  Are they important to you?  How and why? 
3. What problems arise from excessive ethnocentrism?

Assignment 1: Discussion

In this third module, we are discussing the human socialization process and how it influences our psychosocial development. After you have read the reading assignment and lecture for the module, please respond to all parts of the discussion by Week 3, Day 3:

1. Identify and describe Erikson’s stages of development as each applies to your own personality formation. How did success at one stage prepare you for meeting the next challenge?  What do you anticipate for stages you have not yet reached?
2. As you progressed through each stage, how did the agents of socialization change as to their level of influence?  For any stages you have not yet reached, which agent(s) do you predict will be the most influential?
3. Look in the Argosy University online library and the Internet for information on “feral children.” Explain why feral children are used as examples of young people for whom the socialization process has been stopped.

Discuss the methods by which socially constructed definitions of deviance are tied to the dynamics of power and inequality

Project description
In addition to referencing concepts from course lectures and readings, you must cite at least three (3) external sources which connect a specific form of deviance to systems of class, race, gender, age, politics, economics, fiance or other social forces that contribute to social stratification and inequality. Some considerations: Who are the “deviants”? Who are the involved parties and/or stakeholders in the process? What are their roles? What interests are being served or protected, and how?
