teaching patterns to preschoolers & primary grade students

1) An overview of research on the usefulness of pattern instruction to children (preschool-3rd grade range; specify which skills needed in further child’s education the pattern instruction might transfer to and any successful interventions that would support the usefulness of patterning instruction for child’s later academic performance)
2) The types of patterns children are commonly taught in this age range
3) The cognitive challenges children face when solving the common patterning tasks (such as alternating patterns, e.g., ABABA?, or growing patterns, e.g., ABBCCCDDD?), identifying the typical cognitive skills needed for these tasks and explaining why children might have difficulty with these tasks.
