Question: In a formal essay, using each of your three chosen authors’ works, demonstrate how a particular value or trait can be traced from the beginning of American literature to the early 18th century. You MUST quote from EACH author’s work(s) to receive full credit. Be sure to develop a clear thesis—not just one that restates the question, but a thesis that responds to the question. Thesis Example: De-valuing women is a consistent trait seen in Smith with his treatment of Pocahontas, Winthrop and his treatment of Hutchinson, and Rowlandson’s own inability to value herself. You cannot use the example trait for your own response! Essays are formal, three to five-page essays with a thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You may not use any sources other than the ones provided for our class from the instructor.
