The purpose of this activity is to identify the characteristics of a Compare and Contrast Essay and in order to be able to write one effectively later in the course.

Directions

1. Read the following about Compare / Contrast Essays:
   • Types of Papers: Compare/Contrast Essay
2. Read the following essay  about Maya Angelou and Alice Walker at least twice.  
   • Shades of Being Human   
3. Compose the following:
   • A short paragraph in which you copy, paste and underline the thesis statement and then explain your choice.  Consider these questions as you explain yourself in this paragraph:
     • • Is the thesis analytical?  
       • Why?  
       • Does it include all three of the parts a thesis should include?  
       • If not, what is included and what is missing? 
   • An outline of the body paragraphs with a main idea sentence and evidence that backs each main idea up. Start like this:
     • State Ms. Angelou’s manner of narration of tragedy (Here you will paraphrase the main idea in your own words)

     • State Alice Walker’s manner of narration of tragedy (Here you will paraphrase the main idea in your own words)
