Cultural Artifacts – American Popular Culture

The goal of this assignment is to give you experience in the task of the cultural historian. Cultural historians look at mediums of communication such as movies, plays, paintings, poetry, literature, dance, music etc. and relate how these “cultural artifacts” convey a common sense of beliefs and values which we refer to as popular culture. Your task in this assignment is to place these artifacts in the historical context derived from course readings, lectures and other secondary sources. This assignment requires you to analyze THREE “CULTURAL ARTIFACTS” FROM THREE DIFFERENT “MEDIUMS OF COMMUNICATION.” All three of these items must relate to a common theme of modern American culture. The “cultural artifacts” may come from one time period or they may cover a span of time. However, they must be the product of American artists.
