Discussion #10: Colorblindness and policymaking

Some argue that policymaking in the United States should be colorblind and apply to all people, regardless of race, equally. Others argue that policymaking must take race into account if we are to address the continuing racial inequalities that are a consequence of slavery, segregation, and discrimination towards non-White groups. Those who argue in favor of colorblind policymaking emphasize that it will lead to less resistance and “us vs. them” thinking, since many see policymaking as a zero sum game, where a benefit for one group means taking something from another. Those who want race to be taken into account in policymaking counter that this is the only way to address inequality and make American myths regarding equality of opportunity and outcome a reality. What perspective do you agree with and why? ? Do you think race is something that lawmakers should address? Why or why not?
