Discussion one

I don’t know how to handle this Writing question and need guidance.

1- You own stock in Gentry Company, and you read in the financial press that a recent bond offering has raised the firm’s debt/equity ratio from 35 percent to 55 percent. Discuss the effect of this change on the variability of the firm’s net income stream, other factors being constant. Discuss how this change would affect your required rate of return on the common stock of Gentry Company.

2- “Young people with little wealth should not invest money in risky assets such as the stock market, because they can’t afford to lose what little money they have.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?

discussion one

This week you will have two discussions. Your Instructor will be choosing the discussions questions and posting them as the first posts in the discussion forums. The requirements for the discussion this week are a minimum of four posts on four separate days. The total combined word count for all of your posts, counted together, should be over 600 words. Be sure to answer all the questions in the prompt and to read any resources that are required to complete the discussion properly. In order to satisfy the posting requirements for the week, please complete your initial post by Day 3 (Thursday) and your other posts by Day 7 (Monday). We recommend that you get into the discussion early and spread out your posts over the course of the week.  Be sure to reply to your classmates and instructor. Try to attempt to take the conversation further by examining their claims or arguments in more depth or responding to the posts that they make to you. Keep the discussion on target and try to analyze things in as much detail as you can.

Singer argues that there is no moral justification for denying moral consideration to animals. Can you think of a reason why our moral consideration should include all humans regardless of their level of cognitive ability, yet denied to non-human animals simply because they have lower levels of cognitive abilities (though still higher in some cases than those of human infants and some mentally disabled humans)? What response might he have to your way of drawing the line between the types of beings that should get moral consideration and those that should not?

First, briefly introduce yourself to your group. Where are you from? What is your major? Interests? Likes? Dislikes? Career plans? All answers voluntary. For discussion: Why, INDEED, doesn’t everyone get the case for free trade? What are the arguments for and against free trade? What is your opinion on the matter? Has Rodrik changed your opinion? Or do you disagree with his analysis? *When answering, please change the subject line in your message from “Re: Kick-off Questions” to something that reflects the content of your post. This will make it easier for everyone to see the varied kinds of responses.

Subject: Free Trade is a Stepping Stone to a Global Society
Topic: Disc 1 – Pink
Author: Nicholas McLin
Date: September 10, 2011 4:03 PM
The majority of people that do not get “the case for free trade” have only taken basic economics. As with all subjects, the beginning courses present the basic ideas and later on in more advanced courses you learn that the “basics” were not as clear cut as you were taught. Arguments for free trade focus on both parties enjoying increased capital and social benefits of trade, along with the fact that free trade opens up workers to perform other tasks and does away with inefficient worker allocation . Those against free trade point out that trade hardly results in both parties benefiting equally so it is better to protect your interests and not those of competitors. I believe that though free trade is harmful in both the short and most likely in the long run, it will help standardize trade agreements and result in a global government that looks out for the well being of the planet not just a sovereign nation. A planetary government would not have to deal with tariffs or free trade due to the fact that they will not have to deal with closed borders. Rodrick has changed my views on free trade, in the sense…
