For this discussion, I am providing several options for questions. Choose ONE question to respond to (if possible, choose one that someone else has not addressed yet) for your initial post. - In the video, “How the NSA betrayed . . . ,”Hypponen quotes the president of Brazil, Ms. Dilma Rousseff: “If there is no right to privacy, there can be no true freedom of expression and opinion, and therefore, there can be no effective democracy.” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? (Explain with examples.)
- In “How the US government spies . . . ,” the discussion is mostly about gathering and storing data that could be used against people protesting. Why might the government be particularly interested in this group? How can you connect this to our reading in the Declaration of Independence from last week?
- How do we see the value of privacy eroded in the article about China? Is it worth it to be able to provide more safety? (For example, with crosswalks or identifying known/suspected criminals.) How would you feel about living in a world with this much surveillance? In what ways are we doing similar surveillance or shaming in our own country?
- What do you think was the point of the short story, “One Star?” It is a thriller/adventure story on some level, but is it also making an argument about privacy? What do you think that is and where do you see it in the story?
