I’m stuck on a Writing question and need an explanation.

DQ1:

Research and briefly describe a terrorist event (United States or abroad) that has occurred over the past year or so. Referring to the course readings on defining terrorism, how does this event fit a definition of terrorism?

Comment on at least one of your classmates’ events and discuss whether you agree if their event fits a definition of terrorism or not. Provide a reference for your resource(s) for your classmates.

DQ2:

Can terrorism or political violence ever be justified? Why or why not? Were deliberate attacks on civilians during World War II acts of terrorism or acts of war? Explain your position.

Explain your answers in full detail. Provide resources to support your position.

Discussion 1 (250-300 words and 2-3 credible references in APA)

You are a prosecutor assigned to a District Attorneys office in a major urban area.  You have a very full case load.  You specialize in drug and violent crime investigations. 

Consider each of the following scenarios.  Offer an opinion as to whether the actions are legal, and support your answer.  Offer an opinion as to whether the actions are ethical, and support your answer. 

1. Leaking the identity of a seventeen year old gang member who you are fairly certain committed a drive-by shooting to the media knowing full well he was in danger from rival gang members, and then offering protective custody only if he would plead guilty. 

2. Authorizing the arrest of a fourteen year old boy who confessed to a crime, even though there was no serious possibility that he was guilty, in order to pressure a guilty relative to confess to murder.

3. Authorizing the arrest of one brother for possession of a very small amount of marijuana, even though you know the charge would ultimately be thrown out  by the judge (but the young man would probably lose a scholarship to college) in order to have leverage so that he would testify against his brother, who is a known drug smuggler.  The drug smuggler’s activities have resulted in the deaths of numerous teenagers.

Discussion 2 (250-300 words and 2-3 credible references in APA)

When discussing ethical dilemmas that are unique to the legal profession, the topic of plea bargaining oftentimes comes up.  According to Wikipedia, plea bargaining involves an agreement in a criminal case between the prosecutor and defendant whereby the defendant agrees to plead guilty to a particular charge in return for some concession from the prosecutor.

Imagine you are a district attorney prosecuting a burglary case.  The defendant is willing to plead guilty in return for a sentence of probation, and you believe that this is a fair punishment.  Although a thorough investigation was conducted, you believe the evidence that is available may not support a conviction.  However, the victims are upset and want to see the offender receive prison time.  You realize that these victims are taxpayers, so they pay your salary.  What should you do?  Support your decision by constructing a logical argument for the course of action you choose.

Education 1 Athletes 0

The article for this week’s discussion is very interesting in the fact that the sporting industry is very lucrative and in the “game” to make money.  These sport teams need to charge unreal prices for tickets and merchandise in order to pay their players so the cost out ways the means.. Corporate sponsors paid athletes absurd amounts of money because they know people will buy their products endorsed by a professional athlete. Financially America has it backwards, we invest more into sport teams yet we cut back on education programs. The comparison is unrealistic in the sense that it teaches our youth that education comes second to sports. I just need to play a sport and I’ll get paid so I don’t have to study.  Having an education is so much more important than playing a sport because without an education you will find it hard to compete in the real world. Teachers provide that educational footing so their salary should reflect the efforts they put forth.  The harsh reality of the situation is that most professional athlete’s end up broke by the end of their career because of the lack to education and poor investments so tell me where the money should go.

O’Sullivan, Sheffrin, and Perez explain marginal utility as “the change in total utility [satisfaction experienced from consuming a good] resulting from getting one additional unit of a good.” An example of marginal utility for me would be that I love cake, and for each additional piece of cake (unit) I get I am more satisfied (change in total utility). When it comes to the law of diminishing marginal utility it states that “as the consumption of a particular good increases, marginal utility decreases” (O’Sullivan, Sheffrin and Perez).
