Annotated Bibliography

Grossman, W. (2007). From anarchy to power. New York: NYU Press.

Grossman’s book centers on the history of the Internet and its creation and intentions. While the book is somewhat dated considering how fast the medium changes, this resources provides initial details of the Internet and its basic functions, including original purpose. The book’s depth (when compared to possible academic database articles) also makes it a good resource, especially for specific examples and pertinent dates in law and politics.

Lee, Y. (2007). Internet and anonymity. Society 43(4), 5-7.

This is an excellent article on Internet anonymity, communication, effects, and perceptions. It presents summaries of three specific value-based models (Libertarian, Private Enterprise, and Statist) and how these sides view anonymity. In addition, the article discusses how the Internet relates to market economy and pseudo-anonymity. It can be used to summarize various viewpoints on anonymity with regard to the economic and technical aspects, while exposing multiple aims and intentions.

Levy, S. (2008, February 13). Google and the China syndrome. Newsweek Media Group. Retrieved from

http://www.newsweek.com/

This short document verifies actions taken in China by Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! in connection to free speech restrictions and dissident arrests. It summarizes the issue and presents both sides of the argument in a fair manner. This summary will prove helpful in framing the overall argument my paper will present.
