750-1000 words

MLA FORMAT

Write a Classification and Division essay. You are free to write about any subject of your choice. Remember, your essay must have 3-4 distinct categories. The categories must all be on the same level. They must be divided according to the same principle of classification. Do not leave out any important categories. Your essay should have all the necessary components of a formal essay: an introduction, 3-4 body paragraphs, a conclusion, transitions, and a strong thesis statement.

In this module, we have discussed a few different ways to approach a classification and division essay. A classification or division essay groups objects, people, or events into categories by the
characteristics that they share. Usually, the writer begins with a group of people or things and then
separates them into subgroups or types. There are several steps to writing an effective division or classification essay. Start with an outline. Decide on what the purpose or point of the essay is before writing. Begin with an exciting title, avoid obvious titles such as “Essay #1”. Review MLA formatting in the textbook. Format the essay correctly. No outside sources required.

The topic is up to you to decide on. Go to p. 430 in your textbook for prompt ideas, if needed. Avoid being vague. Establish a subject. Select a topic that has a general grouping that can be classified or divided into subgroups or classifications. For example, “Despite the variety of experiences that different students have with different courses, most college classes can be classified into one of four categories: ideal classes, worthless classes, disappointing classes, and unexpectedly valuable classes”. The introduction should start with a hook, and the last sentence in the introduction should be the thesis statement. Body paragraphs should all begin with transitions, as well as effective topic sentences. And finally, the conclusion should provide closure for the reader, reminding them of the purpose of the comparison.

Refer to chapter 12 in the textbook for extra help. There is a sample student essay on pp. 340-43.
