Prioritizing Factors on Identity Charts and Context:
Select the five or six items from your identity chart that you think are most significant in shaping your identity. Those factors may change when you think of the contexts in your life. How does your identity change when you are at work, in school, at home, with friends, etc.
1.Some aspects of our identities are consistent over our lives; others change as we gain skills and have different roles in life. How has your identity changed in the past five years, for instance?
2.Some aspects of our identities feel very central to who we are no matter where we are; other aspects might feel more like just background or it could depend on the situation we are in. Does your identity change in different contexts?
3.Some identities are labels that others put on us; even though others see us as having that identity, we don’t see ourselves that way. How much does that matter to how you feel about your identity?
4.What parts of your identity do you choose for yourself? What parts of your identity do you think are determined by others, by society, or by chance?
5.Whose opinions and beliefs have the greatest effect on how you think about your own identity?
6.What dilemmas arise when others view you differently than you view yourself?
