Bio 101 Lab 3 Formal lab report instructions You need to include the following sections in your formal lab report: Introduction Materials/Procedures (includes a deviation section at end) Results – Data and written summary Discussion Below is a description of what to include in each section: Introduction: written in paragraph form o In your OWN words (do NOT copy the manual) write in paragraph form o Describe the BACKGROUND of the experiment and WHY the experiment is being performed A brief background on the different organic molecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, catalase, coenzyme/cofactors) The importance of having positive and negative tests The types of test to identify the presence of each organic molecule – End with a couple sentence summary of what you were specifically testing (i.e. the unknown and catalase experiment). Summarize tests/conditions tested for each. Procedures: written as a numbered list -You should start by listing all the materials used in your experiment under a heading of “Materials” -Under a heading “Procedures”, you should list what you did to conduct your experiment in bullet points. -If any deviations, changes, or mistakes occurred during the experiment, make sure to write them down in a “Deviations Section” at the end of your procedures. -If no deviations, make sure to write no deviations under the “Deviations Section”. Results: summary section written in paragraph form -You should include tables for positive and negative result observations for each test, unknown sample results for each test, and catalase experiment results for each condition -You need a detailed table caption for all tables describing what each represents. -Following your data section, you should have a written summary of your results in paragraph form stating the key points of your experimental results. Discussion: written in paragraph form -What conclusions can you draw from your experiment? -Based on your results and to list of food options, what was your unknown food? -Discuss which tests helped you the most in determining your unknown food. -Discuss the results of the catalase assay. -Did the results match what you would expect based on what you know about enzymes and how temperature might affect them? -What could happen to cells if they do not produce the catalase needed to break down hydrogen peroxide? -Would you change anything to your experiment if you repeated it in the future in terms of limitations in the experiment or how you implemented the experiment?
