Psyc 221 Psychology Learning Reflection Journal

INSTRUCTIONS:

Weekly Journals: During each of the assigned weeks, you will write two paragraphs, each 300 words in length (i.e., 600 words total). The first paragraph will describe a topic that you found particularly interesting during that week and what made it interesting, and the second paragraph will describe something that you have observed occurring in the real world that exemplified that topic.

Only one topic may be recorded in the journal for each assigned week and the observed real word occurrence must be clearly related to it

Readings for this week include Chapter 5 and Chapter 6.

Chapter 5 focuses on biological aspects of personality. This chapter is unique in providing a comprehensive overview of biological influences on personality, but it is written in a way that is tied to other approaches and is easily understandable.

Chapter 6 presents us with B. F. Skinner’s contribution to the theory of personality. This chapter brings to life the power and controversy surrounding behaviorist and operant learning approaches to personality.

Readings for this week include Chapter 9 and Chapter 10.

CHAPTER 9: Humanistic and Existential Aspects, this chapter covers the humanistic and existential aspects of personality that are distinct from the other seven perspectives. You may find that you tend to react strongly to this approach, either appreciating the positive, spirituality of this perspective, or finding it unappealing and even unscientific. This chapter explains the origins of this perspective, and points out why it sometimes provokes so much passion.

CHAPTER 10: Person-situation Interaction is a unique chapter that attempts to provide an objective overview of the greatest controversy in personality psychology: If personality is stable, why do behaviors vary so much? By using Lewin, Murray, and Sullivan to lay the groundwork, the influential ideas of the interactionists are made more sensible and understandable. Also, by this point in the course, you should be ready to think in a critical and sophisticated manner about personality, and should be able to realize the important influence of both the situation and personality.
