Assignment Objectives: This research paper is the final paper in English 112 and should demonstrate mastery of the course objectives outlined in the course syllabus.
Requirements:
1. (30% of final grade) Research and report on an issue, innovation, or ethical question in your chosen major or a field of interest in a 5-7-page researched essay with a minimum of 4 sources (3 secondary sources, 1 primary source).
• Write in academic, third person, objective voice
• Format according to MLA or APA conventions, depending on the focal discipline of your paper.
• Paper should be primarily evaluative, approaching the issue/innovation/ethical question from several angles.
2. (5% of final class grade) Additionally, write a 1-2 page reflection on the process you took to complete this assignment.
Instructions:
1. Read, annotate, and review Chapters 5-9 from An Insider’s Guide to Academic Writing.
2. Choose your paper’s focus. The topic should be narrow/specific, for instance, not childhood diabetes, but rather how fast food affects childhood diabetes.
3. Conduct research. Use class notes and a writing handbook/style manual to evaluate your sources and to make sure those sources meet assignment requirements.
Remember that you need a total of 4 sources, 3 that are secondary and 1 that is primary. At least one source should be a substantial peer-reviewed scholarly journal article. You may consult with a Holly Librarian for help with evaluating sources. Synthesize what you have discovered by critically reading and annotating your sources to establish a firm understanding of the various dimensions of this issue.
4. Write the research paper and the reflection, using paper planning, rough drafts, revision, and proofreading to produce a successful final draft
