- Read ‘Introduction to Gender, Sex, and Sexuality’ on the Week 3 Learning Resources under the Week 3 Content. Define the meaning of sex and gender. Explain how sex and gender are related to each other or not using your own example.
- Read the article, ‘The Social Construction of Gender’ by Judith Lorber on the Week 3 Learning Resources. What’s the meaning of the social construction of gender by the author? Summarize the major ideas of the article, and your reaction of the ideas.
- Watch Video, ‘Why Don’t Men Wear High Heels’ on the Week 3 Learning Resources under the Week 3 Content. Interpret it from the social constructionist perspective and your reaction of this video.
- Watch Video, ‘Gender and Race’ under the Week 3 Content. Discuss the varying degrees of power and privilege that different individuals have in American society or other countries where you currently reside. Focus on the privileges that are given to dominant groups, which often are invisible. Identify your own invisible privileges that are given to you as a member of a dominant status group (ex, white, heterosexual, male, etc.).
- Discuss how nature (genetic) or nurture (environmental) plays a large role in the development of gender differences and gender roles. Defend your perspective.
- Discuss third and fourth gender options some cultures have and the ways that individuals of these genders are treated within their culture. How does this differ from the dominant standard in Western society?
- Imagine that you were born the opposite gender (if you are a female, imagine you were born a male, or if you are a male, imagine you were born a female). How do you think your life would be different than what it is like now? Pick a few main differences to discuss. What do you think you would like best about being the opposite gender? What do you think you would like least?
