Frederick Jackson Turner was a historian famous for his Frontier Thesis. For our purposes the two basic principles you need to know are:
The conquering of the American Frontier shaped the American Character.
The American Character has as one of its central characteristics “rugged individualism” where each individual strives to overcome obstacles and adversity.
By 1890, he said the American Frontier was conquered; however, he believes that “Americans” will seek out new frontiers and challenges to overcome whether they be physical, social, political, or in whatever form they might take place.
