Professor Pala and Class,

Between 1971 and 1978 more than 54 death were attributed to the faulty fuel tank design in the Ford Pinto and internal corporate documents showed that Lee Iacocca, other members of management and Ford’s engineers were aware of the problem. The case against Ford was pretty solid, but to prosecute individuals like Lee Iacocca are not how a corporation works. In the normal course of business, a corporation offers substantial protections to management and other individuals who are employed and the corporation is considered an individual and bares the burdens of the mistakes made in its name. The facts in the Ford Pinto disaster also never make a claim the Mr. Iaccoca performed a prohibited act or specified any state of mind, or intent to commit a crime (Cross, F. B. and Miller, R. L. (2015 pp.189). These facts, despite Mr. Iaccoca’s blatant disregard for public safety, mean that indicting Mr. Iaccoca for a crime would have been tough, if not impossible, given the complexity of the entire process and the number of people who were aware of the issues with the Ford Pinto faulty fuel tank.
