You will be looking at some of the landmark cases that decided the power of the Supreme Court including Marbury v Madison, McCullough v Maryland, Gibbons v Ogden, Baron v Baltimore, The Cherokee Nation v Georgia, and Worcester v Georgia. There is an excellent summary of these cases on the thirteen.org website which can supplement your textbook’s explanations of these cases.
The website is here: https://www.thirteen.org/wnet/supremecourt/antebellum/landmark_marbury.html (copy and paste for link)
The textbook pages for the cases are as follows:
Marbury v Madison – Chapter 7 (Pages 194-195 and Choices and Consequences Page 196)
McCullough v Maryland – Chapter 7 (Page 212)
Gibbons v Ogden – Chapter 7 (Page 212)
Baron v Baltimore – Not mentioned in the text so pay particular attention to Thirteen.org’s summary
The Cherokee Nation v Georgia and Worcester v Georgia – Chapter 8 (Page 236 and Choices and Consequences Page 237)
After reviewing these cases, explain how the Supreme Court was shaped by these decisions. Pay attention to judicial review, states’ rights, and foreign nations. What were some of the consequences of these decisions, both positive and negative? Do you believe that the Court decided correctly? Do you believe that the Court’s decisions were followed as they had wanted? Can you see the relevance of these cases in how our nation developed and where we are today?
Your response should however be connected to the major themes of this course so keep those in mind while you are reading as well.
please write a well-thought out academic essay with a clear introduction, body of evidence that refers directly to your readings, and a conclusion that goes beyond what you have already said, perhaps making connections to contemporary issues.
