What is declarative memory?

Declarative memory is sometimes called the explicit memory. The declarative memory refers to your memories that can be recalled consciously.

Examples are: world facts, phone numbers

Declarative memory also has two sub-types: 1) episodic, and 2) semantic. Episodic is highly emotionally charge events in your life, like your first day at school, first kiss, etc. Semantic is world facts, etc. as above. Both kinds of memory depend on a functionally operational hypocampus and cortex working as they should. If, for example, you have a stroke in these regions you would have trouble with these kinds of memories and life becomes very difficult. The other major type of memory is called Non-declarative and this is things you know by doing.
