1.We’ve spent a goodly amount of time discussing Youngstown and Atlantic City and how Bruce writes about both. Explore Bruce Sprinsteen’s music and find other examples of the manner in which he confronts the effects of deindustrialization. What are his main concerns? With the city or with its people? Be specific, drawing evidence from the song(s) to select.

2.Find and read David Brooks’ article in the Times in which he discusses the idea of “paracosms.” Do you buy his argument? Why or why not?

3.Assuming you do not buy Brooks’ argument about paracosms, give your reasons why Bruce, whose songs are sometimes so very local in both place and character, is so popular abroad. Why does he draw audiences of 60,000 or more in places like Barcelona and Oslo?
