“old” is quickly discarded
If it happens today – it’s news. If it happened last week – it’s no longer news

2- Significance
Number of people affected
Education and information
Moral or social importance
3- Proximity
Closer to us have more significance
Local issues – international issues that may have local consequences
Not only physical – think of bonds that also occur (e.g. international student will think thinks that happen in their home country are important)
4- Prominence
Famous or well known
Stories that receive extensive coverage
5- Interest (Human Interest)
Tends to appeal to emotion – amusement / sadness / joy
Different sections can appear for different emotions / interests
Entertaining
Choose 4 categories of news. Find 4 different articles that would each fulfil the specific characteristics that you have chosen.

E.g. Human Interest
